Open Farm Sunday
Bedfordia Farms is an active member of LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) and works with the organisation to build public trust and understanding of food and farming in a variety of ways including supporting the nationwide initiative, Open Farm Sunday.
Beginning in 2007, Bedfordia Farms, along with other farms across the UK, has opened its gates to the general public to give visitors a family day out and a taste of life on a commercial working farm. Bedfordia’s event regularly attracts around a thousand visitors, with more than 2,000 people attending in 2016.
Highlights of the day include:
- Seeing a sow with her 14 day old piglets.
- Experiencing a tractor and trailer ride through Bedfordia’s grain fields to see first-hand where breakfast cereal, bread and vegetable oil comes from.
- The opportunity to climb aboard large pieces of farm machinery and speak to arable experts.
- Watching a lorry tipping grain.
Open Farm Sunday provides “a chance and rare opportunity for families to come and find out how a working farm really operates. We receive extremely positive feedback and appreciation from visitors each time the event is held” Ian Smith, MD Bedfordia Farms.
In 2016 over £4,500 was raised by Bedfordia, with money going to The Trussell Trust, Road Victims Trust, and the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institute, along with various other local groups in Milton Ernest.
